Joanna Durney Sanz is an abstract artist who practices drawing from life regularly. These experimental mixed media works combine the figure with intuitive abstract backgrounds, melding the known and unknown into fantastical new worlds and spaces. These scenes were inspired by photos of the artist Georgia O’Keefe, who championed the beauty and starkness of nature in her sensual paintings.
Joanna studied Fine Arts at the University of Sydney as part of a Bachelor of Arts degree and received a Certificate in Drawing from the National Art School, Sydney. She also holds a Graduate Diploma in Design from the University of Technology, Sydney and has worked as a graphic designer.
Joanna has been a finalist in the Greenway Art Prize, Hunters Hill Art Prize, Whitewall Art Prize, Hornsby, Willoughby and Blue Thumb Digital Art Prizes, and has won prizes at Hornsby and Parramatta Art Society member exhibitions.
Joanna has held two solo exhibitions, one at Tiliqua Tiliqua Gallery (2022) and one at Gallery 11:11 (2024). Joanna coordinated a group show of life drawings with fellow artists at Luna Studio in 2023. Joanna’s abstract paintings were also featured in a group show at Galeria Azur, Miami, Florida, USA during June-July 2023.
